HWY 17 too unstable to begin work, Caltrans says

Published Friday February 10

SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS – Officials are in disagreement over whether it is safe to clear a landslide in the Santa Cruz Mountains this morning, according to the Calif. Hwy Patrol.

State Hwy seventeen is closed in both directions between Scotts Valley and the Santa Clara County line.

While personnel from the CA Division of Occupational Safety and World approved work to continue, a Caltrans engineer remarked that it was too risky to start work on the not stable hill.

Crews will be tracking movement in the area into the evening and will reevaluate the situation, CHP Officer Trista Drake said.
